As parents, we all have our preferred playgrounds that we gravitate towards. It might be the secure, enclosed environment that provides peace of mind or the impressive climbing structures that cater to our adventurous five-year-olds. Regardless of how we get there—whether by car, on foot, or during a jog—each of us has our favorites, chosen for their unique features that resonate with our family's needs.
During Spring break in San Diego, I stumbled upon a playground that caught my attention from the freeway while out with my son. Playgrounds have always held a special significance for me, and whenever I travel, I make it a point to locate a great one to explore. Let’s be honest; I’m not inclined to stop at a mediocre or unattractive playground. At my son's age, a well-designed playground can keep him happily engaged for an hour, allowing me the chance to relax, catch up on messages, or join in on the fun.
Tecolote Shores South is truly one of the most impressive inclusive playgrounds we've encountered. The 2003 $4 million renovation in Mission Bay is particularly noteworthy, and I’m eager to showcase some of its remarkable design features that may initially appear ordinary but are, in fact, exceptional.
One of the most notable features is the playground's flooring, which is not only visually attractive and comfortable for children but also designed to support all abilities. Whether children are using their feet, walkers, or wheelchairs, this surface guarantees accessibility for everyone. It’s essential to note that traditional mulch falls short in terms of inclusivity, making this innovative flooring a vital component of the playground's overall inclusive function .

The bucket seat is specifically designed for children who may lack back or trunk strength, making it a fantastic feature for inclusivity. This thoughtful design ensures that all kids can enjoy the thrill of zip lining, regardless of their physical abilities. It's a great example of how play spaces can be made accessible to everyone.
Before highlighting the most sought-after piece of playground equipment, it's important to acknowledge the numerous inclusive features we found like the communication boards, roller slides, access ramps, and boat rocker.
Among these, I firmly believe that an inclusive spinner is vital for fostering an inviting atmosphere in playgrounds of all sizes. This addition not only enriches the play experience but also draws significant attention, making it a favored play piece for children of all abilities. In an exciting initiative, the Recess Project plans to donate an inclusive spinner to a deserving school in 2025, further advancing the mission of inclusivity in play areas.
