The Creator of Snoopy Really Loved Dogs!

Did you know that the creator of the famous Peanuts comic strip, Charles M.Schulz, (remember Snoopy) helped start the organization Canine Companions in 1975?

Through public speaking and donation campaigns he significantly helped get this organization off the ground.  This organization trains service dogs to help people with disabilities.

The two main breeds that Canine Companions typically use for service dogs are Labrador retrievers and Golden retrievers. These dogs are known to be good with people and very friendly. It takes a long time to train a service dog.

The dogs are fostered for the first year of life and learn basic training commands from their foster family. They are loved and cherished family members and learn to bond with people.

Then, it takes 4 to 6 months just for basic training at the training academy. If the gods make it through this round then they go on. If not, they can be adapted by their foster family.

Then, for specialized training it can take up to a year to 18 months.  This means that dogs are usually over 2 years old before being placed with their new person and family.

To learn more about what these amazing dogs can do check out Canine Companions. Also, they have a live puppy cam. Check it out.
