How I Became an Artist

My name is Natalie Fiske, and some may know me as the designer of the 2025 Recess Project ornament. While that project has brought me wonderful recognition, I’ve actually been an artist for over ten years. I specialize in pet portraits, though I’m capable of creating a wide range of artwork.
What makes my art unique is my technique. I don’t primarily use a paintbrush most of my work is created using my right index finger. Holding a brush has always been challenging for me, though in recent years I’ve incorporated brushes more into my process. My finger-painting technique has become a signature part of my style and something people are always surprised to learn.
My journey into art began in an unexpected way. In my sophomore year of high school, I took an Art and Design class and completed one painting, but I didn’t pursue art seriously at the time. In 2015, while volunteering at the Milwaukee Public Museum, I mentioned to a volunteer assistant who happened to be an artist that one of my close friends loved the Disney Pixar movie Finding Nemo. I told him I wanted to try painting Nemo for her, and he offered to help. We created the piece together, and from that moment, my passion for art reignited.

Since then, my art career has continued to grow. I’ve created numerous pet portraits for friends, family, and clients, and I enjoy experimenting with vibrant colors and unique techniques. When I tell people that my paintings are done mostly with my index finger, they often don’t believe me at first. I love seeing the look of surprise and delight on their faces it’s one of my favorite parts of sharing my work.
Thank you Natalie for creating such beautiful art and
sharing it with The Recess Project! :)
